We did it again!

Man, if there were two bigger losers on this planet than Joyce and I, I’d like to meet them and give them a prize for being such big tools. Seriously though, that’d be incredible to meet another couple of people who see more movies in one sitting than Joyce and I.

And this past week, she and I did it again. Last time we saw 4 movies at once. This time we didn’t quite reach that mark–mainly because the movies were a bit longer–but we were close. We saw 3 movies: X-Men III: The Last Stand, Over The Hedge, and The Da Vinci Code, and of the three, The Da Vinci code was, at least in my opinion, the best one.

Maybe it’s because I didn’t read the book nor did I expect much from it since everyone I knew said it was incredibly bad, so I went into the movie thinking that it was going to be a big laugh. Surprisingly, the movie kept me on my feet and guessing the whole way through (which makes sense I guess since I didn’t read the book and I didn’t already know the ending like those who did read the book). After watching the movie, I can understand now why churches are seeing this movie in groups. There’s so much fiction in the whole plotline that it’s easy for others to fall into the whole story behind the movie and start thinking that it’s truth. But I think if people really use their heads, they’ll realize it’s just a movie and clearly not on any mission to make converts out of people.

Over The Hedge was just a fun kiddie movie. I wasn’t expecting it to be any good because Dreamworks Animation haven’t had the best luck with their animated feature films (eg: Antz, Shark Tale, Madagascar) except for the Shrek movies (and Wallace and Gromit, I guess, but even that didn’t make a big splash). Actually, their next upcoming film looks totally stupid (see Flushed Away). In general, I just never liked how the Dreamworks Animation films looked so jagged and jumpy in terms of character movement. Maybe it’s because I’m comparing to Pixar which basically has a monopoly on the whole CG-animated feature film business and rightfully so since they do seem to do what they do very well.

Anyway, Over The Hedge was entertaining to say the least. It was fun, witty at times, and definitely had its good moments. I enjoy movies where they seem to make contraptions out of everyday objects. Not MacGyver-type things, but just clever things you’d never expect to be made (especially by animals who can talk and walk and strategize). The ending was a bit corny, but I think kids will like it because it teaches them about the values of family and friendship and blahblahblah–basically, stuff a parent would probably approve of.

Here’s the big surprise of the movie-hopping day: X-Men III: The Last Stand was mildly dissapointing! Yeah, I came out of that theater thinking, “Hmm, that could have been better and I could have been more entertained. And the inspirational one-liners from the characters could have been left out.” I was so excited for this movie after liking the first and second X-Men films that it was just so hard to not expect something just as good, and unfortunately, I was slightly let down. Don’t get me wrong, the film isn’t a disaster in any way, but I just thought it didn’t live up to it’s two previous ones. Since X-Men IV just got the green light to start production, I hope the fourth installation of the series makes it up for this one. Umm, also, what is Beast’s mutant power other than being able to hang upside down and jump very high and far? He’s just a blue hulk, right?

There are a lot of movies coming out in the next couple of weeks that I want to see before the summer ends. Joyce, you know what to do! I swear, one day we’re going to get in trouble for piling on movies like this. But until then, hop hop hop!
