The Departed

I’m going to assume right away that the majority of my readers are of Asian background, which probably means that you’ve heard or have actually seen the movie trilogy, Infernal Affairs. I really liked Infernal Affairs both for its acting and for its storyline. Plus, I actually thought for once that it wasn’t a cheesy or stupid Chinese movie — it was smart and suspenseful. If anything, I thought the movie even beat many of the American-released films out at the time (this is, about 2004) in terms of entertainment value.
With that said, I knew that The Departed, which was based on Infernal Affairs, would probably be either one of two things: really good; or really bad.
Thankfully, The Departed was insanely good. Sure the storyline is basically the same, but director Martin Scorsese really delivers a robust action/suspense movie that definitely kept me on my toes even though I essentially knew what was going to happen to who (and who was going to die or live in the end).

I’ll keep this review short since I’m hardly a professional critic, but if I know what I’m entertained by, then I’ll simply say that this movie is exactly the kind of movie I like watching. It’s got action, a good twist, and enough unexpected scenarios to fill the entire movie time with (meaning it wasn’t slow or boring). So if you’re inclined to watch the same movies as I am (you’ll know from previous “Movies” category posts), then you’ll most likely enjoy The Departed and Infernal Affairs. Check them both out, but if you’re itching to see The Departed, don’t wait either. It’s worth seeing in the theaters.
The ultimate way to judge if a movie is worth it? Here’s how: I’m going to buy this DVD.
- The last 4 movies of the summer
- Smokin’ Aces
- The Life of David Gale
- Toy Story 1 & 2 DVD
- Pirates of the Caribbean (2): Dead Man’s Chest
