I’m going to review 14 movies now

March 4, 2007 @ 12:49 am

I just updated my Wordpress installation [geek-speak]. The new update allows me to use this movie rating plugin that’s so far pretty neat. I like it. And since this post happens to be a movie-review post, what better way to introduce you all to it, right? Let’s get started!

Here are the list of movies I’ve seen since around December or so. I’ve been meaning to write about them as I see them, but I just keep forgetting, and then I see more movies, and the list just gets bigger and bigger. So, finally, I’ve compiled them all here to get this batch over and done with.

Children of Men | [rating:4]
I’m all about movies that give a somewhat bleak outlook on the future, and Children of Men definitely does that. I mean what’s worse than knowing that you’re basically the last generation to be alive and that every subsequent person who dies from this point on — because of war, disease, accident, or intent — means one less person on Earth? That just sucks. But back to the movie…I really liked it. Maybe it’s because I like movies about the not-so-distant future in general because I like to compare or at least hypothesize how we, today, might get there, tomorrow. Although I do recommend the movie, I really hope we never fall into that future. Ever.

A Scanner Darkly | [rating:3.5]
What a fantastic-looking movie! It was so trippy seeing things in half-animation and half-live-action (I don’t know if that’s the correct term…) because some things would totally go out of perspective and yet still look like it all made sense visually. The movie takes place in a not-so-distant-future where society has really just more or less flat-lined. People are under surveillance because of the rampant use of a drug called “substance D” that seriously affects the human brain and it’s ability to function. In order to control drug use, the government has placed narcotics agents in houses under surveillance in order to gather evidence and eventually take down drug users/sellers. The problem however is that the drug is so addictive that it makes its way well beyond the usual confines of society and into the lives of the narcotics agents themselves. Anyway, the film goes on from there in that sort of way.

The Last Kiss | [rating:3]
I was told by some that this movie was going to feel like the sequel to Garden State. Well, those people were wrong. This movie was much more serious and not nearly as good. There were the occasional funny parts but I just kept getting this very “dark-ish” feeling while watching the film. Be prepared to see some weird ending if you’re planning on watching this film.

Bomb The System | [rating:3]
I remember seeing the trailer to this film last year and thinking, “Wow, this could be really cool.” Well, it was really cool.

Idiocracy | [rating:0.5]
Oh. My. God. Do not watch this movie. SOOOOOO BAD. Not even a tad bit funny at all. ZERO. Waste of my time. That’s all I have to say. >:|

Jesus Camp | [rating:2]
One thought that kept coming back to me while I was watching this film was, “What are these kids going to think in a few years? How will they see themselves when they see this film in a couple of years?” In a single word, I can personally describe this movie as disheartening. This movie just made me so angry and so sad on so many different levels. This movie made me realize why the world hates Christians. It’s because these radically fundamentalist Christians are sooo God-loving that they forget to love each other and those around them; they forget that God is a merciful God who shows compassion for those who are lost. They’re just worried about being radically different. Where’s the relation to the real world? This film is total bonkers. You have to see it.

Lucky Number Slevin | [rating:4.5]
Lucy Liu was so funny, bubbly, and cute in this movie. I’d love to meet someone like her someday. I really didn’t know anything about this movie before I watched it. All I knew was what was showed in the trailer, and knowing most trailers, that’s very little (nowadays, some trailers don’t even show what the movie is about). But wow, was this movie a gem. It was funny, suspenseful, and exciting. I’m just more disappointed that I didn’t see it in theaters when I had the chance!

Talladega Nights The Ballad of Ricky Bobby | [rating:2]
I’m beginning to become immune to this sort of humor. It was funny, for sure, but not nearly as funny as most other movies I’d consider tops on my comedy list. And in a very small way, I find the characters that Will Ferrell plays very annoying because they are always all just as stupid as the next (literally speaking). Nothing special here. It’s your typical Will Ferrell comedy. Cheap entertainment, at best.

One Last Thing | [rating:2]
Small flick, small cast, shallow story. Expect little from this film and you’ll enjoy it.

The Illusionist | [rating:4]
A great movie with a great twist! Fantastic!

Open Season | [rating:3.5]
I usually don’t watch CG-animated cartoons these days because lately they’ve been very bad (with the exception of the Pixar films and Shrek titles). But to my surprise, Open Season was very entertaining. It’s nothing very deep, but it is sweet and simple, like how cartoons should be. Plus, there’s a fairly decent message behind the animation: animals are our friends; we shouldn’t kill them.

Pursuit of Happyness | [rating:3.5]
A little too hyped up for my own taste. Good. But seriously, not that good.

Norbit | [rating:1]
Thank goodness I hopped into this one. I never would have paid to see this film if my life depended on it. The only reason this film is getting 1 star is because I don’t want to rate it the same as Idiocracy, which was much much dumber.

Reno 911!: Miami | [rating:3]
Fun. Lots of mindless, stupid, fun. I recommend if you aren’t totally serious about what you’re watching and just want to kill some time with laughter.

By the way, if you want to see a list of movies I’ve reviewed, you can now go to the Movies page and see them all there. Yum! Yay!

I’m not use to this new layout, and I think I prefer the links on the side instead of on the bottom.
