Asians and the race towards racist hype and accusation

Seriously, where is the racism I keep hearing all these Asians around me talk about?

Everybody is saying that there is an increase in retaliation towards Asians because of the South Korean background of the Virginia Tech killer Cho Seung-Hui (or Seung-Hui Cho). But I really don’t know where these claims are coming from. I’ll say straight up that I physically look like the killer (Asian male, tan-ish, with a shaved head) and yet I have not had any trouble in the past week at all (nor have I seen any trouble in the past week towards other Asians around me).

However, despite all that, I keep hearing other Asian people talk about how they are being mistreated and discriminated against because of this whole “racist media” ordeal. Seriously now…c’mon…let’s be a bit more real here.

Do I just happen live in my own bubble of disregard to people’s racist comments. I think not. I think Asians are just as capable of blowing things out of proportion as the media outlets they’ve been accusing of being racist.

I am Asian.

CLARIFICATION: Anyway, I’m not saying that the racism doesn’t exist. I’m just saying that, contrary to what a lot of Asians wish to believe at the moment, it’s not MORE racism happening because of the current events. If anything, it’s just the same amount.

Feel free to read this thread that Jared sent over, as they sorta discuss the ramifications of this week’s events and the problem of racism.
Also, the NYT has one thing about it.

Personally though, I still don’t see the increase in racist remarks, comments, and/or actions from other individuals towards Asians here in NYC. Maybe it’s isolated to locations outside of major cities like NYC, where Asians might not be as predominant. Who knows. I certainly don’t. I just know that it’s not as serious as some Asians are making it out to be.

I dunno why, Jared, but that one quote there made me laugh a bit. I mean, it’s not funny of course, but you know…

Hmm, I should put this clarification in the post. I think I’ll do that now.
