OMG. My favorite Garfield comic strip is actually bigger than I thought!

The Sunday, March 23, 2003 Garfield comic strip that I have a newspaper copy of contains a whole row that I’ve never seen before until I looked it up in the Garfield comic archives.

It’s called a throwaway panel. Many cartoonists draw unimportant things in the throwaway panels because they know that many newspapers will throw them out. The first time I read this strip, I thought it was pointless to show the house, but the second time through, I realized that it’s extremely important: it establishes that it’s morningtime. Without it, you think that Jon wakes up in the middle of the night, looks around, and falls back asleep. With it, you know that Jon wants to fall back asleep with his pets.
