Word just came in that Timbuk2 is reviving their classic waxed canvas material for their line of messenger bags. THIS IS FANTASTIC NEWS*!
I could never understand why Timbuk2 originally did away with their greatest material — waxed canvas — when they did. It was uber-strong, ultra-water-resistant, and in my opinion far superior to the ballistic nylon and cordura material they have been offering. Waxed canvas was just all-around a better choice. I owned two waxed canvas Timbuk2 bags before they just suddenly stopped producing bags with it. Of all the Timbuk2 bags I’ve owned, those two waxed canvas versions were the best.
Anyway, waxed canvas is making a comeback.
*The news is good, but not as good as it sounds. The waxed canvas material will only be on pre-made bags, of which none are the classic messenger style. The waxed canvas material is also not offered in the Build Your Own Bag feature, which means you can’t even make your own bag with the revived material. What a gyp. I’m disappointed. If they reinstated this material into the Bag Builder, I’d seriously buy another one right this instant. Sure, waxed canvas is back, but with these hideous pre-determined colors, who is really going to want one?
