Bioshock

I’ve been hearing a lot about Bioshock lately (in stores and online). It’s a new first-person shooter video game that, at first glance, looks a lot like a combination of the scary parts in Doom and the futuristic parts in Halo.
The game takes place in 1960 and follows Jack, a plane crash survivor, as he explores the dystopia of an isolated underwater city called Rapture, struggling to survive the mutated beings and mechanical drones within it. The architecture and society of Rapture was strongly inspired by the works of Ayn Rand, especially Atlas Shrugged, while the game itself is described by the developers as a “spiritual successor” to their previous PC title System Shock 2.

I haven’t played the game yet or seen it in action, but from the screenshots alone, I can tell that it’s going to be scary. I don’t know if it’ll be as scary as Doom 3 though, since that has been, so far, the only game ever that has made me scared to play it. But rest assured that if you’re looking for little “ghost-like” children and people roaming about and wanting to kill you, then Bioshock is full of that.

The website for the game is very creepy. The constant rain and run-off water sounds mixed with the traditional “scary” soundtrack help to make this effect very noticeable. It fits the look and genre of the site.
The only thing that bothers me about this game so far is that nobody in real life ever just holds a gun out in front of them with one hand while walking. It looks so unrealistic (especially with that pistol-like gun).
I would imagine, just from past experience, that if your computer is somewhat older (and slower), that you won’t quite get the same intended experience from the Bioshock website as those with faster and more updated computers. So if you’re on a friggin old machine, then upgrade, or just don’t even bother because the site will rruuuuuuunnnnn eeexxxtrrrrreeeemmmeeeelllyyyy ssllllooowwwwww. Ok, you’ve been warned! :)
