Check your Gmail at RMIT (with Fmail)

One of the biggest gripes I have about the RMIT network is that if you’re using the RMIT internet connection, you don’t have access to the major external email services (Hotmail, Gmail, Yahoo! Mail). They cite security risks for restricting the access, but I think that’s a load of bullcrap. I think it’s their way of forcing students to use the crap Novell online email client (every school that uses it has students that want it out).

Anyway, believe it or not, a new Facebook application called Fmail will allow you to check your Gmail account from within Facebook. I’ve already tested it from the RMIT network and it works perfectly. You can send, receive, check, star, and sort email like you would in Gmail.

And unlike the Gmail Lite installation that also allows you to access Gmail through another website, Fmail doesn’t sacrifice looks for functionality. Fmail looks like the result of Gmail and Facebook having a baby.

So whee! There we go. Now I can access my Gmail from Facebook from RMIT. Cool!

Thanks for this tip! I’m going to study abroad at RMIT in July and didn’t know anything about how their email or Internet system worked. I’m assuming you go to RMIT?
