Australian TV: The Mint
I wouldn’t exactly call The Mint “quality television”, but for some reason I can never turn the TV off when it’s on.
The Mint is hosted usually by two co-hosts (out of at least 5) each night. The co-hosts encourage viewers to call in with answers to various types of games. Callers have to either guess a certain number of fill in the blank with letters or words. The games themselves are quite stupid and the answers are always a bit deceptive (or in some other cases, completely random).
The main reason I watch the show, however, is not because of the entertainment factor (the callers are sometimes funny and the reactions of the hosts are usually the same). No. It is because I like listening to the hosts talk so that I can then try and copy their accent.
I’m happy to say, finally, that hours of watching The Mint have paid off, as I am now able to perfectly (and locals seem to confirm this) say the Australian “no” and “know”. Whoo! This is quite challenging and fun all at the same time. It’s a shame that Australian TV syndicates so much American shows.
