Use 'MaPLe' to memorize NYC avenue sequence

Here’s a NYC tip! If you’re like me and often have trouble remembering the exact order of the avenue names on the East Side, you can use this mnemonic device to help you out: MaPLe.

MaPLe stands for Madison Avenue, Park Avenue, and Lexington Avenue (going West to East).

Now you’ll never have to ask anybody for directions on the East side!

Where did I hear about that little trick? I got the tip from the New York Times City Room post about how the city is placing compass decals at the entrances of high-traffic Subways in order to help tourists and native New Yorkers find their way about town.

By the way, I love the idea behind this and I hope to see some more when I get back to NYC next summer. Cheers!

Good idea! Some avenues are too long to take the time to walk and turn around because you realize you’re walking in the wrong direction.
