Jose Mestre is a man who suffers from a very serious facial tumor. The tumor started when he was a teenager and has since grown to a size of 15 inches long and weighing in at 12 pounds!
For years, Jose refused proper medical treatment because of specific beliefs prohibiting him from having a blood transfusion. Jose is a Jehovah’s Witness.
Jose’s condition, haemangioma, stems from abnormalities in the capillaries and veins in his face. In effect, what should be a river carrying blood back to his heart has turned into a lake, which has now expanded to obliterate the rest of his features.
The Discovery Channel UK will be featuring a video segment on Jose Metres and his rare condition tonight at 9PM (and with repeats on the 9th, 10th, and 18th of December).

If a Jehovah’s Witness cannot “consume blood products” as the congregation elder stated above, through eating or vein, why can they eat meat? You don’t get the meat without the blood. Whether you see it or not it has been there. I don’t understand Jose’s goal. Attention? Begging in a town square, but then mad for being looked at? Going to the doctor for help, but not taking it?
I have a disability that cannot be helped. It is hard to watch someone turn their back on free help and burden a loving family so uncaringly. I felt worse for his sister.

This demonstrates the religious intolerance so common in our society. You don’t have to look very far to find that there are a lot of good Christian J.W.’s. They love Jesus and spend a lot of time trying to share what they believe with others. If fellow Christians can’t recognize the good in other human beings, both Christians of other faiths, as well as other good non-Christians, they are the ones in need of mending evil ways. I am a Christian, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I find any one who teaches a philosophy which condemns others for theological differences between religions, is in need of greater love, the kind of love Jesus demonstrated for every human being, regardless of religious affiliation. It is also wrong to condemn all J.W.’s for the actions of one person… individual members are not responsible for any actions of another person, even if he was their founder (I don’t know anything about the accusations made). In any case, love and tolerance of others, is what will help the world really come to know what it means to be Christian… not fighting and contention over differences.

And i definately see the love shown by JW’s towards their neighbors volunteerily encouraging others to investigate their Bibles more fully. And i appreciate Jose’s faith and love for God by remaining obedient to his Word the Bible despite opposition and a serious ailment.
He might be a “man with no face”, but I see in him a man with faith and integrity. If someone’s integrity is lost, then he has no face worth showing (that’s why he cover it or hide it out of shame), and he is as bad as dead (some even commit suicide). So give Jose a break. It is with much sadness that I discovered that Jose Mestre died last weekend. Apparently he died of hemoraging while surgeons were operating on his tumour last week. Rest in peace with the angels.

I was in Portugal this past September and Jose still looks the same. There he was in Praca do Rossio with his ID card. I had seen him a few years back when I was there this past September he looked the same so I’m not sure he went through with any treatment.
Hopefully, they’ll do a follow-up on him.

More importantly, I can’t find anything about Mr. Mestre either. If he has passed I hope that his family knows that not everyone is so judgmental. I for one am impressed with not only his strength throughout his journey, but his friends and family’s loving kindness as well. I am so very sorry to hear that he passed. I saw the documentary about him on tv and it really got to me emotionally and so I came on the web to try and find anything about him and I am very sad to hear this news. He had so much heart and feeling it really broke me up inside. While I commend him beyond limits for never abandoning his faith despite what he was born with I still only wished he had a few moments with a new face and a different look at life.
It nearly brought me to tears when he said “Why is this happening to me” and then at the end when he finally felt belonged to the members of his community. I hope he had some happiness in the end. My heart goes out to his sister and family and may God bless them. He isn’t suffering anymore. He is happy and no longer disfigured now that he is in a better place. God Bless you Jose Metre!

I was so sorry to hear that Jose had passed. I just watched My Shocking Story last night and was hoping to come on here and hear good news about Jose and his fight for a cure. We all take life for granted and we bitch about things that do not matter. I feel so ashamed! What a strong person Jose had to be and I am sure God put him here to show us that we can perservere and deal with whatever life grants us. The key to all of this is “unconditional love”. Which I am sorry to say, from some of the talk here and the story, that not many people gave him. God bless his sister, for she truly knows what unconditional love is and what it means to put someone before yourself! I would love to have a sister like you! Sometimes we are blinded by outer beauty to the point that we can not see what is inside(much like the sun’s glare when looking out a window). When there is a lack of what people consider outer beauty is when we feel the need to dig deeper. God bless Jose and his family and may you all recieve your rightful place in heaven!

While we might all feel sorry for this poor unfortunate person, remember, he did not vigorously seek medical attention and then decided his religious beliefs were more important than his health. His religous beliefs must have precluded working since he allowed himself to play vegetable while his life was financially and physically the responsibility of others. Others enabled and were victimized by Jose.
jehovahs witnesses don’t receive blood transfusions because of what it states in Acts 5. However, I find most people are close minded and only believe what they hear from friends and family. My father is a surgeon at Columbia Memorial Hospital in New York, and they have collectively agreed that infact, “blood-less” surgeries are the best way to preform a surgery. He says that he speaks with jehovahs witnesses regularly on the many alternatives to blood transfusions. And that the “best medical care would be to do so without a transfusion”. So for those that say “jehovahs witnesses are simpletons, do not expect medical treatment, would kill there children for not receiving blood” are so ignorant to the fact that its actually better for your body to not receive a blood transfusions. There are over 50 other procedures to restore plasma cells, increase blood volume, cell salvage etc. Most people in the world are misinformed. So even if you don’t agree with their religious beliefs, educate yourself on whats behind it. Jehovahs witnesses are highly educated, and although I am not one of them, they are definitely worth listening to because they have their facts straight.
Sometimes lifes circumstances take away the best alternative. One might have to go to plane b or c. Perhaps even get a transfusion when blood loss is rapid.

So sad to hear he died during surgery, but it was no surprise. Hemangiomas bleed like crazy – my husband has a tiny one on his arm and when it gets scratched it bleeds and bleeds. One the size of Jose’s must have been very fragile and was basically just a big sponge full of blood – can you imagine trying to stop the bleeding from something like that? In my opinion it should not have been attempted. He could have bled to death even with transfusions. He could never had had anything near a normal face no matter what they did. And it was starting to invade his brain, according to the documentary. He probably didn’t have much longer to live anyway.
Correction: When I said “it should not have been attempted” I was referring to the surgery, not to stopping the bleeding.

If Jose (or others) want to forego medical treatment for 30 years because of their beliefs, so be it. He went down the way he wanted and we should not feel sorry for him, at least, no more than anyother person who dies. It was a very small bell that tolled when he died because as far as I can tell because it appears he spent his days playing games with his buddies all day and hanging out with his niece. The tragity is the lack of good use of the life God gave him.

im truly sorry if jose did indeed pass, i think he was a very brave person. i was born with cleft lip and pallet which of course has been treated, and well. i am very lucky to have had the treatment that i have had but nevertheless it bothered me for a long time and i felt very ugly growing up. what i experienced seems like child’s play next to jose, i wish i could have met him to see what made him so strong and what kept his happiness, i would say it may have been his faith and walk with God.
and those that have so much against religon, i think its harsh to look down on jose for clinging to something that brought him any comfort while dealing with his condition.
i have also seen some comments about how science or intelligence can never mix with religon. those types of comments always make me wince because i dont believe it to be true at all. in a wonderful essay by Albert Einstein he makes the point firstly that there is a diff. between the “superstitious” religion and faith in a creator. He also makes the point that this creator would have obviously made the world and therefore something to learn about. not only did God make something to learn about but put the desire in us to even learn. therefore, without God involved we would have no passion towards learning and science, Einstein says in his essay “science without religion is lame, and religion without science is blind.”
in essence God would not only have created science but tied His very self not only in the thing to be discovered but into the process of doing so….

First of all, as an American, let me apologize for the person calling them self ‘JaneS’ because she does not represent us as a nation, nor does she speak for the Christian community, and certainly NOT republican political point of views. I am afraid it is a prankster who is most likely a far left leaning liberal who is spoofing a republican point of view with intent to make people believe the lies widely viewed about a stereotypical republican for intentional malicious reasons.
That said, this is such a sad story. I really hope Jose is alive and has begun his long path of surgical procedures. It seemed to me (after watching his story) that Jose may be using the J.W. point of views on blood as an excuse because he is terrified! Also, my feeling is he has come to identify himself with this ‘mask’ and is somewhat hiding behind it. Combine all this with feelings of hopelessness and I cannot blame this poor man for his actions nor his feelings. We as fellow humans should not judge because we cannot begin to understand unless we have walked a mile in his shoes. In the words of Jesus “let those without blame cast the first stone.” People…. we need to put down our rocks! None of us are sinless and without blame!
I hope with the support of his loving family, especially his beautiful sister, Jose will find the courage to move forward and chose life. I will remember him and his family in my prayers tonight.

I have been on every website I can think of, national databases of birth deaths’ and marriage, Ancestry.com, google search and even the surgeons and hospitals websites and there is no confirmation anywhere that Jose has passed away as yet.

I’m an American and I am ashamed that some of these hateful comments were made by “proud Americans.” Sometimes this ignorance makes me want to move to Canada or the UK. Some of the comments stated that America’s health care system is better than Europe’s. This is definitely not the case. Anyway, my heart goes out to Jose’s family.
