Ok, this animated GIF is hard to explain. I’ve been staring at it for a while now and I just can’t understand how it’s fooling me. Basically, what happens is the image magically changes from 12 people to 13 people after one animation switch.

Can anybody explain to me just what is going on?

    Haha, that’s pretty neat. I think this is how it goes:

    Phase 1: Note the second column. There are two men: one in white, one in black (top to bottom). Now, note the man who is second from the far right in the top row (black shirt).

    Phase 2: The aforementioned man becomes the third man (at the top) in the second column.

    When there are 12, each one is a little taller than when they are 13. You can also see that, when they are 13, each one is missing a little slice somewhere (it’s especially noticable on the hair and feet of two people). So, a little piece of each of the 12 is reshuffled to make a smaller, incomplete, 13th person.

    You could take before, during the switch, and after screenshots to see how it works.

    The second comment is a trackback. Doobybrain is set up to display them in the comments. It means that somebody linked to this page.

    ===Notation:===
    P1 or P2 ( signifies phase )
    c1 or c2 or c3 or c4 or c5 ( signifies column )
    x or y or z ( foremost man[x], to middle man[y], to backmost man[z]

    ex: P1c1x ( The foremost man in first column in phase 1 wearing black shorts and white shirt… he is almost the same in both phases)

    ===Please note:===

    That phase one(P1) has 12 men
    That phase two(P2) has 13 men

    ===What exactly is happening?===
    It is easy to understand where this mystery man came from (in P2) if we think of the men in terms of the elements that compose them.

    Element 1 is Head
    Element 2 is Torso
    Element 3 is Shorts (Note: 7 black-shorts in P1 and 8 black=shorts in P2)
    Element 4 is legs ( Below shorts )
    Element 5 is shoes

    ===what happened part 1===
    P1c4x has a large head, ½ of his head (above the nose) is moved to P2c2x(above mouth)
    Note.i this completes P2c2x
    P1c2x head (above mouth) is moved to P2c5x
    Note.ii this completes P2c5x
    P1c5x head ( except for tip of chin but including tip of shoulders ) is moved to P2c3x
    Note.iii this completes P2c3x
    P1c3x (who is tall) head (including top of shoulders) is moved to P2c1y
    Note.iv this completes P2c1y
    P1c1y head (including top of shoulders) is moved to P2c4y
    Note.v this completes P2c4y
    P1c4y head and top ½ of torso is moved to P2c2y
    Note.vi this completes P2c2y
    P1c2y head, torso and ½ of shorts is moved to P2c5y
    Note.vii this completes P2c5y
    P1c5y head, torso, shorts, and ½ of legs is moved to P2c3y
    Note.viii this completes P2c3y
    P1c3y head, torso, shorts, and legs is moved to P2c1z
    Note.ix this completes P2c1z
    P1c1z head, torso, shorts, legs, and ½ of shoes is moved to P2c4z
    Note.x this completes P2c4z
    P1c4z head, torso, shorts, legs, and shoes (almost all of P1c4z) is moved to P2c2z
    Note.xi this completes P2c2z
    P1c1x (very tip) of hair is moved to P2c4x
    Note.xii this completes P2c4x
    P1c1x head, torso, shorts, legs, and shoes ( except tip of hair ) does not move but is in same place as P2c1x
    Note.xiii this completes p2c1x

    ===Conclusion===
    P1c4x large head supplied an additional head
    P1c4y large torso supplied an additional torso
    P1c2y large shorts supplied an additional pair of shorts
    P1c5y large legs supplied an additional pair of legs
    P1c1z supplies an additional pair of shoes (with help from P1c3y)

    The rotations allowed ½’s of elements to be left behind thus completing an additional person.
