Belgian Blue: Meet the Super Cow

Selective breeding techniques have lead to genetically superior cows that look like they have incredible strength and muscle!

By mating the best of the best of the best of the best (you get the idea), breeders have gotten to the point where these “super cows” are larger, stronger, heavier, and all-around better than your average dairy farm cow. There are no artificial chemicals involved in the process. The result is a 100% natural bull/cow that weighs over a ton.

In breeding circles, the big cows are known as “Belgian Blues“. Some more photos of Belgian Blue cows here.

No word however on whether or not these super cows taste better.

It is just wrong! These animals suffer with joint problems, the calves have hypertrophied tongues and have problems suckling. Obligatory C sections have to be performed. Apparently the meat does not taste that great either, i was told by a Belgian :)

Apparantly this was caused by a natural mutation, but why continue to breed on it? It is definately not in aggreement with animal welfare I think.

why continue to breed on it? they look great and produce meat with extremely high protein values, for the sake of humans, as in every other kind of mass-produced cow

I THINK ITS TIME TO USE THE TECHNOLOGY AND RESERCH TO REDUCE POVERTY AND HUNGER IN AFRICA. PLEASE DEVELOP A BREEED FOR AFRICA WHICH CAN SURVIVE HARDSHIPS AND CAN PRODUCE MORE WIT LESS FODDER. BELGIUNS OTHERWISE OWE A LOT TO AFRICANS AS THEY LOOTED IT LIKE ANY THING IN LAST CENTURY.

    Myostatin mutation. Crazy…

Yes, Belgian Blue have nearly twice the muscle mass and thus present a seemingly obvious solution for getting more meat off the cow. However, there is a very legitimate reason why breeding them for beef production has not been pursued: they are simply not cost-effective. The calves are born twice as big as normal calves, and therefore almost always have to be delivered by C-section or at least born with the assistance of an experienced vet/breeder. Frankly, they are more trouble than they are worth.
Impressive animals, yes. Suitable for breeding for slaughter, no.
