Vanishing America by Michael Eastman

Michael Eastman is about to release a new book entitled “Vanishing America” where he documents the decaying and often-abandoned towns, structures, and places in America’s back alley.
Traveling across the country in search for subjects, Michael has finished this collection off with stunning photographs of forgotten America. This is the type of stuff that gets me excited again about photography, and often I find myself wishing that I had the time and money to do such a journey into America’s forgotten past.
From the publisher (Rizzoli New York):
Think of the quirky buildings you pass every day but whose quiet beauty you take for granted—the moviehouses, juke joints, soda fountains, barbershops, roadside diners, and storefront churches. You don’t miss them until they’re gone. As suburban sprawl and strip malls conquer the country, these vestiges of a lost way of life are falling under the wrecking ball. Here the photographer Michael Eastman has made the ultimate road trip, crisscrossing the nation dozens of times, to capture these buildings on film before they vanish.
His hardcover book entitled “Vanishing America” will be on sale April 2008 for $39.95. Pre-order it on Amazon.com now for $26.37.

If you wish to see more of Michael Eastman’s work, you can do so by checking out his other book, “Horses” or by visiting some of his work in person at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the International Center of Photography in New York City, The Art Institute of Chicago, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
