You’ve seen the photos of the missile that launched the failed satellite into the sky, and now here are the photos released by the United States Navy of the missile that blew that failed satellite to smithereens!

Unfortunately, there are no photos of the actual impact yet (and no mention from any news outlets of whether or not that exact moment was even photographed).

But yep, here are several photos of the single modified tactical Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) launched from the AEGIS cruiser USS Lake Erie (CG 70) belonging to the US Navy fleet.

Fire Controlman 2nd Class Andrew Jackson (pictured above) was responsible for the launch of the missile which successfully hit the falling satellite at approximately 247 kilometers (133 nautical miles) over the Pacific Ocean. The falling satellite was traveling in space at more than 17,000 mph.

This video above shows a computer-generated simulation of the path at which the debris from the satellite will fall towards earth. Most of the debris orbits the earth and eventually gets burned and disintegrated upon reentry.
