Acting homeless on America’s Next Top Model

WTF.

The most recent aired episode of America’s Next Top Model (February 27, 2008) had the contestants model as homeless people.

Again, WTF.

I hate people who pretend to be homeless, and in doing so think that they are taking part in a great social experiment (see: TYRA BANKS).

Here’s Tyra the drama queen on her experience as a homeless person.

HOMELESSNESS IS NOT AN EXPERIMENT.

People who are homeless don’t choose to be homeless and they can’t just pack up their things and decide to quit whenever they want, unlike those who are just pretending. No matter how far one may go in attempting to live the life of a homeless person, the fact remains that that person is not homeless and in effect has immediately undermined the purpose of their experiment in the first place.

Think about it: A homeless person does not KNOW for a fact that at the end of any given day, they can go back to a HOUSE/STUDIO/WHATEVER and relax and think over the events that have taken place that day. Somebody who is pretending to be homeless does in fact have this luxury and if anything were to go extremely wrong during their experience, the option is always there to pull the plug and walk away. HOMELESS PEOPLE CANNOT DO THAT.

If anything, these “trials of homelessness” just serve to elevate the person doing the experiment. Really now, what good comes from this? Nothing. Experiments like this just reveal to the person that they’ve been a douche bag all their life because they came to the realization — through the “humbling” experience — that they were mistreating others. We surely don’t need models pushing the stereotype further.

More here and here. And pictures here.

if illegal immigrants can get jobs in the US. I am sure homeless people can too. Homeless people DO choose to be homeless. At anytime they can try to make a change in their life, but they don’t

You ever work at a homeless shelter and watch a homeless person pick through their food because they don’t a certain vegetable or meat?

Life is all about choices and you can choose to change.

Tyra’s comments made me laugh. She is a bit insensitive to people that are not of her class but she means well. It’s kinda funny in a sad way and these experiments don’t open other people’s eyes to the problem of homelessness. It is a large combination of factors: the comment above does have a point. Some people DO choose to be homeless. It’s a shocker but true. Others made a series of dumb choices in their lives and ended up like that, others were abused etc. One thing is true though…. WTF is up with that pic?

Tonight i witnessed one of the most horrible sites that i have been seeing quite often. there were three men under the bridge on front and oregon avenue; in the most deplorable surroundings. their physical condition was so depressing, but i got a chance to talk with them. actually, we were looking for them. we heard that homeless people lived under that bridge and i knew they would need food. so i decided to scout the area out, and what we saw was so sad. we stayed in the car as we were under the bridge with them. after introducing ourselves to them, we explained that we feed people that are homeless. weekly, we drive through the streets of philadelphia looking for people to feed a hot meals whether they are under the subways, love park, market street, 8th & arch cafe, ridge men shelter, 4th and market street- pnc bank, and other places. it is no joke. with all the donations i receive, the money my church gives me to purchase food, my employees donation, family members donation and the money i take from my own pocket, it is such a blessing. there are so many homeless people in areas you couldn’t imagine. so many people are stepping up to the plate and doing what they can to end homelessness. when i walk away from these people, i say to myself, “there go i, but by the grace of God”. you really have to have a passionate heart to go into the trenches and seek those out that need help. these people aren’t pretending! my prayer is that the homeless people will accept the programs that are offered to them to become stabled and empowered to enter society.

    sincerely,

    love on the streets

I agree with you. But I do think that pretending to be homeless can be a good social experiment. Not so that you’ll see what it feels like.. cuz as you said the people who pretend have a home to go back to at the end of the day, but I think it’s interesting to see how everyone reacts to you and it could help to give you a better understanding.
