The Australian Centre for the Moving Image (the same place where I saw the Pixar: 20 years of animation exhibit) opened the doors to its latest exhibit on Thursday, March 6, 2008.

The new exhibition called “Game On” is all about the rich history of video games.

Original illustrations by Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and concept sketches behind classics like Tomb Raider and Grand Theft Auto provide unique insight into the creative process of game development. Rarely-seen consoles, controllers, arcade machines, packaging and collectables are brought together in a showcase of game history like no other.

The Melbourne Metblog says that there are 120 different game consoles on display! That’s incredible! For those in Melbourne, it’ll be a rare chance to witness first-hand just how the video game industry has evolved over time into a multi-billion dollar industry worldwide.

The “Game On” exhibit is open daily at ACMI from 10AM-6PM (and until 9PM on Thursdays). Tickets are $15 or $10 with concession. Whee! I’m so going to this!
