Ford Transit Connect taxi for New York City streets

If everything lines up correctly, the Ford Transit Connect van above could very well replace the Ford Crown Victoria taxicabs that travel on New York City streets. The Ford Transit Connect van was originally introduced in Europe but in a year or so (sometime in 2009), it’ll begin to filter onto the streets of major metropolitan cities throughout the US.
In contrast with New York City’s current taxicabs, the Ford Transit Connect offers a lot more space (headroom, legroom, storage, etc.) as well as better fuel efficiency which is very important when you have 12,000+ taxicabs in operation.
You can read the press release for the vehicle and then view some photos of it. It’s ugly, but when was a cab ever pretty?
If you’re curious, the Ford Transit Connect taxi is on display at the New York International Auto Show going on now at the Javits Center in NYC.
