Festo AirJelly: the robot jellyfish that flies in the air

I just saw this over at Supertouch and my jaw just dropped.

The robotic entity shown in the video above is the Festo AirJelly, a jellyfish-like robot that flies through the air. It was recently unveiled at the 2008 Hannover Messe in Germany.

According to the automatically translated page (thanks to Google), I can gather that the AirJelly is constructed partially with a helium-filled “ballonett” and is powered by two lithium-ion polymer batteries by which the central electric motor is connected (I’m assuming this motor moves the tentacles).

Festo is also the same group that showed off a similar “lighter-than-air” object called the Air_ray at Hannover Messe the year before. Check out the video of the Air_ray below.
