Chrome messenger bags are looking good

So one of my friends here in Melbourne is a messenger and I was talking to him about messenger bags. Somehow we got to talking about Timbuk2 and he mentioned how their bags aren’t as good as they used to be, and I agreed.

As some of you may know, I love my Timbuk2 bag, but when I see some of the new ones around town, I notice how “cheap” they look and how shotty the construction is compared to mine.

After Timbuk2 was acquired by VMG Equity Partners in 2005, they quickly expanded their line of bags and got rid of some of their better bag material to make way for cheaper, mass-producible bags. This is good for the company, but it’s not so good for the buyer because the bags break down quicker.

Anyway, I’m off on a tangent, and I need to get back on topic. I meant to write about how great Chrome bags are. I remember when Chrome manufactured custom bags for Kozmo.com back in the day and I almost bought one on eBay.

The Chrome bag descriptions sound nice:

Built to last a lifetime Guaranteed
Our messenger bags are constructed with the most rugged assembly of industrial materials and hardware available: military spec. seam binding, 1000d Cordura shell, 18oz. weatherproof truck tarp liner, and nylon 69 thread.

Weatherproof
It’s like a bag within a bag. The independently suspended weatherproof liner freely floats within the outershell, eliminating seams exposed to the outside elements. Your cargo is safe from rain, snow, mud, and most anything else this cruel world can sling at you.

Comfortable
Our courier bags are designed with an anatomically correct EVA foam padded shoulder strap and cross chest load stabilizer.

Functional
The quick release seat-buckle closure allows for on-the-fly one-handed tightening and loosening of the shoulder strap.

In a nutshell, I’ll probably get a Chrome Citizen messenger now over a Timbuk2 (especially since Timbuk2 has a habit of raising prices constantly).
