AP USES A COMPUTER-GENERATED VOICE FOR TRANSLATION??

Watch this video news report from the Associated Press about the recent 7.2M earthquake in Northern Japan, and then tell me if I’m hearing it wrong.

DID THE AP JUST USE A COMPUTER SPEECH PROGRAM TO TRANSLATE A JAPANESE NEWS CONFERENCE?!

Ok, maybe it wasn’t really the speech program translating the speech, but it sure as heck READ the speech from a translation source. Wow, this just sounds terrible (both the quake and the speech thing).

  1. Interesting! But online translation applications do have their limitations. For something as sensitive as this they should of considered professional translation services – to coin the phrase ‘lost in translation’ has never been more appropriate.
