That’s right. As of this month, according to at least one survey, Australia is the reigning champion of bursting waistlines, beating out the United States at its own game.

The latest figures show 4 million Australians — or 26% of the adult population — are now obese compared to an estimated 25% of Americans. A further 5 million Australians are considered overweight.

The report, Australia’s Future ‘Fat Bomb’, from Melbourne’s Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, will be presented at the Federal Government’s inquiry into obesity, which comes to Melbourne today.

The 32-page report [.pdf] says that about 4 million Australian adults are labeled as obese, with Queensland taking hold of the top percentage of obese adults in Australia. Obesity is a leading factor of increased heart disease, which overall has led to an increase in hospital visits and patient bills.

In short: OBESITY IS THE CAUSE OF ALL YOUR PROBLEMS.

Sorry, but this entire report is bullsh*t.

A few anomalies:
A) It was concentrated on the 45-64 age group and extrapolated across the entire population. This is an age group that is likely to be overweight.
B) It was based on a sample of 14,000 people.
C) That sample was far from random. It was collected via blood pressure screening tests run at shopping centres. As the Professor of Stats at the University of Melbourne said, that’s likely to produce a skewed result as overweight people are more likely to be screened as they are possibly more concerned about their blood pressure.
D) And lastly, it is based on BMI, a fatally flawed method of discerning healthy weight. Based on BMI, most of Australia’s elite footballers are overweight.

It’s a junk report designed to whip up a frenzy and promote research into wieght loss and obesity. And who’s likely to benefit from that? The “institute” who published the report of course.

I’m not suggesting it’s not an issue but if you used the same methodology in any Western country you’d get something similar. And naturally, the sheeplike mass media publish it without question and any sort of reasonable scrutiny.
