Bumac Vitas can sing REALLY REALLY REALLY high

July 31, 2008 @ 6:29 pm

Bumac Vitas is a famous singer from Russia that can belch out notes only dogs could hear. The video of him here starts out pretty normally and then goes quickly into high-gear a little bit into the song. You have to watch this to believe it. CRAZY VOICE.

Thanks Mun!

I just stumbled upon (not with StumbleUpon, by the way) the Microsoft Press Pass image gallery and it’s chock-full of wonderfully hi-res product shots, box shots, official portraits, and other miscellaneous company images.

Almost every image is available in 72dpi and 320dpi formats. FANTASTIC!

Blackburn Voyager 3.0 & Mars 3.0 bicycle safety light combo

July 31, 2008 @ 1:00 pm

I just bought the Blackburn Voyager 3.0 and Mars 3.0 bicycle light combo yesterday from L.L. Bean for $35, with FREE SHIPPING thanks to RetailMeNot.com.

This is a pretty good deal if you’re looking for a good front and back lighting system for your bicycle (or if you just want to wear some lights).

Google tells me to kayak from my house to Melbourne

July 30, 2008 @ 5:43 pm

I sorta did this for fun, not really knowing what to expect as a result of my search for directions, but I did it anyway.

I went to Google Maps and asked it how to get from my house in NYC to a popular shopping mall in Melbourne called Melbourne Central. To my surprise, Google Maps actually returned a result that got me from point A to point B.

The problem, if you can call it that, is that Google Maps expects me to actually kayak the Pacific Ocean to get to my destination. Somehow in the Google brain of computers, this seemed like a justified route to take. Maybe one day I will get to kayak the Pacific…

People reacting during the earthquake in LA

You may have heard about the moderate 5.4 magnitude earthquake that hit 35 miles east of LA on Tuesday morning. It wasn’t “the big one”, but it was violent enough to cause minor disruption and give a lot of people in downtown LA quite a shock.

Raw video is coming in from the Associated Press of several incidences where people were caught off-guard during the quake (actually, I guess it’s ALWAYS people caught off-guard since nobody really knows when an earthquake will strike).

The videos are startling and they show people running outside as fast as possible, which I believe to be the right thing to do when you feel the ground below you shaking. Anyway, check out the videos below.

A photo of the Milky Way Galaxy from Ontario, Canada

July 30, 2008 @ 12:47 am

This photo is amazing.

From APOD:

Sometimes, after your eyes adapt to the dark, a spectacular sky appears. Such was the case earlier this month over Ontario, Canada, when part of a spectacular sky also became visible in a reflection off a lake. To start, the brightest objects visible are bright stars and the planet Jupiter, seen as the brightest spot on the upper left. A distant town appears as a diffuse glow over the horizon. More faint still, the disk of the Milky Way Galaxy becomes apparent as a dramatic diffuse band across the sky that seems to crash into the horizon far in the distance. In the foreground, a picturesque landscape includes trees, a lake, and a stone wall. Finally, on this serene night in July when the lake water was unusually calm, reflections appear. Visible in the lake are not only reflections of several bright stars, but part of the Milky Way band itself. Careful inspection of the image will reveal, however, that bright stars leave small trails in the lake reflections that do not appear in the sky above. The reason for this is because the above image is actually a digital composite of time-consecutive exposures from the same camera. In the first set of exposures, sky images were co-added with slight rotations to keep the stars in one place.

I dream of going to a place like this someday.
