Rob Honeycutt and Mark Dwight, the original founders of Timbuk2, have launched a new bag company called Rickshaw Bagworks that directly competes with Timbuk2 and other similar bag companies (like Chrome and Crumpler) in the ever-expanding bag and backpack market.

The company has already set up shop in their home base of San Francisco at 904 22nd Street. Their line of bags look sleek, speaking to a more sophisticated crowd than their previous bag efforts. I like the offerings so far, despite the lack of any customizing features. But then again, sometimes too much choice is too hard, so maybe for now, this is good.

Have a look at this interview with Mark Dwight and this interview with Rob Honeycutt and see how each founder of this new bag company is looking to change the current landscape of bag sales.

Check out Rickshaw Bagworks for their full line of bags and wallets.

July 19, 2008. Hi there. Thanks for mentioning Rickshaw on your blog. I just wanted to let you know we’re now making bags in our SF factory, and we welcome visitors. We’ll be opening a factory store in October, after we get through two trade shows (Outdoor Retailer and Interbike). Actually, we do make custom bags — we just don’t have our web bag builder finished yet. In the meantime, we’re offering “collections” on our web site, featuring some of our favorite fabrics and color combos. If you want something different, we invite you to bring your own fabric to the factory (or mail it to us). The fabric should be “upholstery weight”, not “apparel weight”. If you’re not sure, drop by and we’ll take a look. There are all kinds of great fabric sources in SF, including Discount Fabrics, Britex and Silk Trading Company, or you can choose from the many fabrics we have on-hand at Rickshaw. We’ve got a number of new products in the pipeline, so keep an eye on our web site for announcements. Thanks! -Mark Dwight, Founder, Rickshaw Bagworks (www.rickshawbags.com, mark@rickshawbags.com)
