Under Their Hats: A look at the items under NYPD hats

The New York Times has an article about some of the items that NYPD officers carry under their hats. I had no idea there was even a pouch or pocket on the inside of the hat. But to know that it’s being used in such a way is kinda cool.

“They’re mementos,” said Wilfredo Vega Jr., owner of Junior’s Police Equipment on East 21st Street in Manhattan, which sells the hats. “The sleeve was created for the purpose of having the Miranda warning readily available to officers, but instead they became this personal pouch.”

Photographer Andrew Henderson who photographed this set of images for The New York Times could (and should) make this into a book. I think it’s a rather interesting look at how NYPD officers cope with the stress of their job in NYC.
