The Andrew Jackson Presidential $1 coin was released into circulation yesterday as the latest in a series of 38 commemorative $1 coins, each with a portrait of a past US President on the face.

I’ve been meaning to post about these coins for a while since I got back to the US. Even though the release of these coins started in the beginning of 2007, the first time I saw one in person was a few weeks ago and I was totally unfamiliar with its appearance. I almost didn’t accept it as currency from a customer because I didn’t know (or forgot) that they were issuing these new $1 coins.

I know a lot of people don’t like it, but after using $1 coins (rather than paper notes) for a whole year (in Australia), I’ve become accustomed to seeing golden coins like this and have grown to prefer them over paper money. Sigh…I miss Melbourne.

Go here to see the coins in hi-res.

Hopefully everyone will start to see more of these dollar coins in circulation. The US Mint has been taking some unprecedented steps to increase the circulation and use of the new Presidential Dollars.
