Michael Phelps wins gold in 100-meter butterfly by .01 seconds

I was watching the 100-meter butterfly last night and I seriously thought Michael Phelps was going to get silver. For just about the entire race, Phelps was trailing Milorad Cavic (representing Serbia) and JUST at the last split second, Phelps took one final stroke and beat out Cavic by 1 one-hundredths of a second. That’s .01 seconds! The race was by far the most exciting race I’ve seen in this year’s Olympics.

The final time for Phelps in the 100-meter butterfly was 50.58 seconds. Cavic received a time of 50.59 seconds for the same race. At the moment, Michael Phelps ties the record for most gold medals won in one single Olympics. He currently holds 7 gold medals and is going for his 8th tonight at 10:58PM ET in the 4×100 medley relay.

Sports Illustrated has a frame-by-frame sequence of photos showing just how far back Phelps was before he made his last stroke and won the gold title.
