Trek District bicycle with Gates belt drive system

The Trek World 2008 show is going right now, and Trek is unveiling several bicycles that make use of the new Gates belt drive system instead of the traditional bike chain. Shown above is the Trek District single-speed bicycle. It’s a beautiful looking bike with a grey-blue frame and orange accents on the wheels.

The Gates belt drive system is supposed to be silent and virtually maintenance-free. I’ve never tried a bike with a belt drive before, but if belt drives are becoming more popular, I hope I get to see how it feels soon.

oo me too! during the summer streets, i think the city was renting out low riders, probably not from trek but same colors on wheels and frame but the frame had flowers…

I’ve tried a couple of belt drive bikes an I like how it works. It’s indeed “ninja quiet.”

Thanks for the link love to Cyclelicious.

What about tiny pebbles getting lodged into the belt when rode on gravel?

Seems like rocks are more of an issue with mountain bikes than roadies? There are already mountain bikes that have belt drive systems, and it seems like people aren’t having too many problems. Check out this video…
