As many of you know, the web changes drastically from day to day, so going back to a complete snapshot of the “web that Google knew” from all the way in 2001 is certainly telling. I did a search for ‘doobybrain’ to see what I was up to back in 2001 and it definitely rang true to my habits back then — music and application customization.
Back in 2001, I often frequented sites like Dmusic.net, Deskmod.com, Deviantart.com, and Customize.org. Those sites were very different than they are today and Google’s 2001 search index brought me back to a time when all I went online for was to download new themes and skins for WinAMP and to participate in forums on Dmusic about the rapidly changing digital music scene.
And the train wreck just keeps getting worse. In a continuation of a series of interviews with Katie Couric, Sarah Palin was asked in this particular segment to name some newspapers that she reads regularly for news. More than once, Katie Couric asked Sarah Palin to name just one newspaper and Sarah Palin just continued to babble on about her “vast variety of sources”.
Katie Couric asked her to name a specific newspaper and Sarah Palin answered “all of them”. Nice one, lady. Nice one.
I don’t often wear a watch on my wrist. In fact, I haven’t actually owned that many watches in my lifetime. The last time I can remember wearing a watch was back in 2003/2004 when my ex-girlfriend gave bought me this Swatch watch that I had been eyeing at the time. I wore that one for a little bit but eventually put it away. Other than that watch, the only other watch I can remember wearing was this really basic Casio digital watch (it was this one, if my memory is correct).
Anyway, with the frequent use of my cellphone, the need for a watch to tell time has pretty much gone out the window. But lately, I’ve found myself wanting to know the time quickly and sometimes getting to my cellphone is just too much of a hassle (it’s easier to just ask somebody). I just can’t be bothered to take it out of my bag just to figure out the time. So I bought a watch. A damn good watch too. A classic G-Shock timekeeper — for $30.
Initial thoughts? Best watch that $30 can buy. Simply classic and definitely a quality build.
It’s a bit of a slow day at work, so I’ve been casually browsing the Flickr Commons photo collection. The photos available there never cease to amaze me. Sometimes I use it as a time portal to travel back in time to a place I wish I could have been at.
Here’s a beautiful photo of freight cars in South Water Street freight terminal in Chicago, Illinois along the Illinois Central Railroad track. That glowing Pabst Blue Ribbon sign is just phenomenal.
UPDATE: Here’s another view of the same place and the same sign, but from anotherangle.
I’ve been posting a bunch of terrible interviews lately, so it’s good to come across one that’s very much the opposite. Shawn Johnson, the 2008 Beijing Olympic gold medalist in women’s gymnastics can be seen here being interviewed by David Letterman. She’s incredibly well spoken for her age (she’s 15) and definitely deserving of the media spotlight.
