Is Spore’s DRM going to ruin the game for everybody?

Spore is out today and it’s seriously sold out in just about all local stores around me! At the moment, the cheapest price online is from Newegg, but I haven’t bought it online because I really want to play the game NOW. The reason why I want to buy the game is so that I can make use of the online game play options (if I download the game, I cannot use any online features).

If you look at the Amazon.com page for the Spore game, you’ll notice that the game has a very low review rating. Despite rave reviews just about everywhere else, Amazon.com users are crying foul over the game’s DRM (digital rights management) and using the review ratings to alert buyers.

Man, if it’s really that bad, should I buy the game? I’m hearing all of these rumors about only being able to install/re-install the game 3 times. ONLY. What’s up with that?

Forget global warming—it’s DRM that’s going to do us all in. It punishes all of the good users for the things that the naughty users want to do. The sad thing is that the naughty users usually find a way around the DRM, and everyone else is stuck with it anyway.

I think I’ll blame the makers of Spore for not making enough copies available, though. If the game were better available (or perhaps if the price were less, though $50 isn’t worse than other games), maybe people wouldn’t be driven to download torrents. The whole DRM wouldn’t even be necessary.

The main problem about the DRM is information. People are not informed about what they are buying. They are not informed about their 3 installs. They are not informed that the Securom Will be in their pc after the game is unninstalled. Why, may I know? They are not informed that there is a chance that this malware may affect your pc. And specially they are not informed that the game cannot be installed without a internet connection. Great, everybody got one of those, but the tricky part is every time you´re connected and playing the game, it will check if you´re autenticated. If their site is out or not supported anymore, like in 5 or 6 years, you cannot play it anymore. If people are informed and still buy the game, is their problem, but if they buy it without knowing and then become annoyed by it´s content, that´s just wrong. People xhould be informed.
