Initial thoughts on iTunes 8.0

If you haven’t heard, Apple released iTunes 8.0 today. The new version has a couple of new features over iTunes 7, some of which I’ll just touch upon right now.

The new grid layout is pretty neat. Shown above, the grid layout makes your music library look very nice, especially if you’re anal like me and have updated ALL of your music files with album artwork.

The Genius is a new feature in iTunes 8 that generates playlists based on music that “goes great together”. It’s also supposed to help you find new music from the iTunes store, which to me, is just a gimmick because I don’t even use the iTunes store to find music.

But what is my first impression of Genius? IT’S SLOW. So slow. I imagine that people have music libraries that are bigger than mine and man, I don’t even want to begin to think about how long they’ll have to wait before it starts working for them.

Another new thing in iTunes 8 is the built-in visualizer that’s very space-y. Stuff and colors blowing up everywhere. I couldn’t care less about this actually.

The only time I was ever impressed by a media player’s visualization was when I was projecting it onto a 10-foot screen.

I have to point out that the correct phrase is “couldn’t care less,” for the reasons detailed here.
