Spore on track to be the most pirated game ever

People really hate Spore’s DRM. That’s just it. It’s so bad that TorrentFreak is reporting that the game has been downloaded over 500,000 times since it first appeared on torrent sites on September 2. If you look at the bigger picture, that means that in just over a week, the game has been downloaded over HALF A MILLION TIMES. This isn’t a small feat when you realize that the game is nearly 4GB in size. That’s a lot of seeding and downloading going on!

To put this into game-downloading perspective, consider this: It is estimated that The Sims 2 has been downloaded about 1 million times since 2004. In already a week, Spore has caught up to half of that number.

It’s a sad fact that a lot of this probably has to do with users being enraged about the DRM situation that comes included with the purchase of the game. Spore was supposed to be the game from EA/Maxis that trumped The Sims in sales numbers because it was everything The Sims was and more. At this rate, it looks like Spore won’t even get near the 50 million disc sales of The Sims PC version.

I’m really wondering if anybody at Electronic Arts is taking notice and whether or not they’ll re-release the game without DRM in the future.
