Today is the first day of Fall

Today marks the first official day of Fall and also the 2nd of only 2 days every year (the other day is March 20) where the day and night are equal in time (12 hours each). This is mainly because the Sun is directly above the Earth’s equator shining on exactly half of the globe at once.

There’s a myth floating around that says you can balance an egg on its end during equinox because the Earth’s gravitational pull is equal (or something like that…I’m not a scientist). Anyway, APOD debunks this myth by SHOWING proof that you can actually balance an egg on its end any time of the year. This is because almost all eggs have irregularities and bumps that allow it to stand on end. Well, so much for that trick!
