You’re probably asking what those colorful bubbles are above. Well, they represent the size of United States government bailouts in history beginning in 1970. That big burgundy dot at the far right? Yeah, that’s the $700 billion bailout that recently failed to get passed. [via]

ProPublica also takes a look at how the US Treasury handled itself after said bailouts. In almost all cases, the US government lost money after the companies bounced back from the bailout.
