The United States Geological Survey, the scientific agency within the United States government that studies the landscape of the U.S. and its natural resources, has a photo library online of their image collection. The photos date back to a time when the U.S. was drastically different than it is now as people then ventured into unknown territory and settled there. Some of the photos date back to the late 1800′s (about the time the USGS was formed).
Go on over there to check out their vast image library with breathtaking photos of the American landscape.
