Robert Shone photographs 3100-foot shaft in China

The Daily Mail has some fantastic (and big!) pictures of one of the world’s deepest underground shafts. This particular shaft is located in China and measures an incredible 3100 feet in depth. An international team of explorers climbed down the shaft during a one-month period and stayed about 4-5 days at a time at the bottom.

Robert Shone of Manchester went with the team and photographed the expedition using the camera set up seen below.

As deep as this shaft appears, this is not actually the world’s deepest known shaft. The deepest shaft, located in Georgia (not the state), measures a length more than twice that of this shaft in China. I’d love to climb down one of these someday. Looks exciting to explore!
