Six Flags New Orleans 3 years after Hurricane Katrina

Erich Morton and his friend James stumbled upon the site of the former Six Flags amusement park in New Orleans. The park was heavily damaged in the wake of Hurricane Katrina and has since fallen into disrepair as cleanup and recovery have all but been abandoned (for now). What’s left in the park’s place is a mess of rides that are left half-standing and a lot of rubble from the storm.

Head on over to Erich’s photoblog to see some of the pictures he took. It’s a haunting scene especially given the overcast weather.

This makes me so sad to look at. I practically lived at this park every weekend the summer before the hurricane hit. My boyfriend of 5 years and I had our first kiss here, lol.

I’m in the Navy and from California so I know about six flags. Right now I’m stationed in Pascagoula MS and recently took a trip to New Orleans. My friends and I saw the Six Flags sign from the highway and decided we wanted to go. To our surprise this is what we found. It was a very depressing scene. Is there any time table when they are going to start repairs and bring Six Flags New Orleans back on it’s feet?

Me and my boyfriend went and explored it the other day. (It’s off limits I know, but there are ways to get in) It was so sad. We went to the theatre, and it seems as if time stood still, chairs still on the balcony waiting for the next showing. =\

These photos are so sad, haunting, even pitiful.
It’s sad that with the huge amount of insurance money Six Flags collected from the damage of the park, none of it went into restoring the park where it once carried music and laughter that floated on the wind.
How many of those happy, laughing people lost their lives in Katrina, how many were remembered when Six Flags gained the insurance funds?

I know this was an awful thing that happened, but why just abandon this once “Happy Land”?
Many jobs could be at this park if Six Flags’ big wigs/money makers would reopen it.
Many of the people who lost homes, and had to pay for funerals would love to have a job.

So sad…so haunting…pitiful when you really think of it.
