56 Leonard in New York City

2008 November 16

A new luxury residential high rise is being built at 56 Leonard Street in downtown Manhattan and it features one of Anish Kapoor’s ambiguous reflective sculptures at the bottom of the building. Occupancy isn’t scheduled until 2010 at earliest, but already the building is being recognized because of its unique design (”stacks” of units on top of each other) and also because of its developer, Alexico Group, who is partially responsible for the “Birds Nest” in Beijing.

Anish Kapoor’s previous works — “Sky Mirror” at Rockefeller Center in NYC and “Cloud Gate” in Chicago — will be accompanied by this new reflective art piece at the base of this building. It will be Kapoor’s first permanent work of art in NYC (the “Sky Mirror” was temporary).

Anyway, you can have a look at this promotional video for 56 Leonard made by Tronic Studio. It’s pretty neat and it definitely gives a better idea of how wonderful this building will be and how great the view will be at the top.
