Bamboo skateboard from Bamboosk8

2008 November 20

According to Bamboosk8, a company that manufactures this all-bamboo skateboard deck, there are many benefits to skating bamboo rather than maple (the material that most skateboards are made of). First, there’s the weight factor; bamboo is simply lighter than maple when layered, pressed, and glued at 3-4 sheets. On top of that, the strength and durability of bamboo is greater than that of maple which should be something most skaters would prefer given the nature of the sport.

And most importantly, bamboo is supposedly more responsive and elastic when it comes to rebounding back to shape after lots of use. Response on a board is an important factor in coming up with harder and more impressive skateboard tricks, so hopefully all of this information is true and boarders begin adopting this relatively new skateboard material.

From physical appearance alone, there doesn’t seem to be much of a different between a traditional maple board and a bamboo board. I’d love to try one out and see what the difference feels like, but I don’t know anybody in the NYC area who owns a bamboo board or knows of a place where I can potentially buy one.
