If you frequent New York City, you’ll know that there’s an overabundance of pizza places named after Ray. But really, which is the original Ray’s pizza? There’s just so many that claim to be the original or first or authentic Ray’s.
The New York Times does some digging and found out that the original Ray’s Pizza is probably now a place located in Hazlet, New Jersey. The story goes that in the late 1970′s, two brothers — Joe and John Russo — left Italy and came to New York and decided to open a pizza place named after their uncle Ray. The restaurant was located at 8th Avenue between 44th and 45th Streets and served patrons until about 2003 when a hike in rent caused them to close.
Then in 2005, they reopened in Hazlet and they’ve been in business there since. And from the NYT article, it sounds like they prefer the location in Jersey over New York City because it’s more peaceful and less of a worry to maintain.
