DIY Helmet Cam from Nick Campbell on Vimeo.
GreyScaleGorilla has an awesome DIY solution to getting the best videos of you and your friends on the slopes during this snowboard/ski season. It is quite simple and the result (see below) is rather perfect.
All you need is a compact digital camera (Canon PowerShot is used above) and snowboarding/skiing goggles. You basically tie the strap to your goggle strap and then squeeze the camera between your forehead and the top of your goggles. Then you’ve got the perfect and uber-cheap solution to capturing all of your falls and jumps in glorious video for all to see later!
Thanks for the link. Show me a video of the Cam Jam in action if you make one this season.
Excellent helmet camera solution! I was looking into buying one of those helmet camera kits but not anymore. I already have a Canon PowerShot (Digital Elph – SD 990 IS) cam so I don’t need to spend any more money.
Thanks for posting the videos.
ItÅ› not Powershot, but IXUS:-)
Yikes, I see the next Canon Error E18 (zoom mech jammed) close ahead…
The zoom mechanism inside consumer digicams has the build quality of a 20ct plastic ballpen and breaks very easy when anything blocks it. (I repaired a Canon Ixus 800IS with jammed zoom mech.)
I would only use a cheap digicam with digital zoom (no snout sticking out) to prevent damage. Some digicams also run boiling hot after a while and may cook your eye like a boiled egg and cause glaucoma when exposed too long to it (at least in summer – winter snowboarding may be less risky). This can even happen by microwave radiation of a mobile phone next to the eye, so do not try to use the brain fryer for this.
