
This afternoon I went to the Joe Ades tribute and memorial down at Union Square. The gathering started promptly at 1pm and went on for about half an hour as people stood and recounted their memories of the interesting Union Square character. A bunch of locally famous people were there, including a man named Barry who supposedly founded the Green Market at Union Square. Ades’ children were also there to thank people for their love and support.
Reverend Billy was there to conduct the ceremonies, offering his own booming voice in tribute to Mr. Ades. Others brought their own vegetable peelers to the tribute and peeled carrots as people spoke into a mic about their encounters with Joseph Ades. The crowd was a modest size and I’m sure Ades would have made some smart remark about people gathering to remember him. It seems like something he’d do.
