I’m looking to upgrade my computer to 4GB of RAM, but I wasn’t sure which configuration I needed for my specific model of MacBook Pro, so I went to the Apple website to get that checked. After I checked, Apple suggested that I buy 4GB of RAM from their website which costs $300. Split that into 2 RAM modules and the price for each becomes $150. I actually didn’t know how much RAM should cost so I figured that this was just normal price.
Thank goodness I checked, because apparently that’s about an 86% markup compared to the same kind of RAM from other companies like iRam which sells the same modules for about $21 each. Buying two of those would still only cost me about $42, an amount that’s significantly less than even ONE of Apple’s RAM upgrades.
What’s the deal here? Am I comparing two different items, or is Apple really milking their customers dry?

They really are making a killing off of their RAM sales. I wanted to get 4GB of RAM for my iMac, so I checked on Apple’s website and it totaled up to like $600 dollars. I went on Newegg and bought the same RAM for $70 shipped. Such a better deal. However, the first RAM I got from Newegg was DOA but they sent me a new set and everything was golden.
Damn! $600? That’s like buying anther budget laptop.
Apple RAM is notoriously expensive for no reason at all. http://crucial.com/ has a good little tool to help you figure out exactly what sort of memory you need.
Oh, thanks for the tip! That made it a lot easier. And it’s good to know that I wasn’t just bugging out about seeing the crazy prices.
Be sure to take third party RAM out if you go the the apple store for fixing up. It isn’t covered under warranty and they don’t like it being in there.
Hello, I’m a big. I love Newegg.I’ve rarely ever seen better prices else where. It’s definitely the best place for gadgets.
