Jazz musician Duke Ellington becomes the first African-American man to appear by himself on a US coin. The new quarter is the first of several new quarters being released into circulation as part of the District of Columbia and United States Territories Circulating Quarter Dollar Program. The quarters from this program are separate from the 50 States Quarter set, so when you see an unfamiliar Quarter in your pocket, know that this is why.
