Dr. James Dobson Steps Down as Focus on the Family Chairman

I just found out about this today, but Dr. James Dobson, the founder of Focus On The Family, has stepped down as chairman of the organization after serving 32 years. According to a Focus On The Family press release, Dobson’s actions are part of a larger plan begun 6 years ago to lessen his administrative burdens and hand leadership over to Jim Daly.

Although no longer the chairman, Dobson will still continue his Focus On The Family radio broadcast and he and his wife will hold the title of Founder and Chairman Emeritus and Director Emerita in honor of the ministry they started in 1977.

Being the head of one of America’s most prominent religious organizations, I’m wondering why this isn’t bigger news. Especially considering the fact that Dobson is also largely thought to be the figurehead of the Christian Evangelical movement — a significant religious demographic — and a major player in swaying public sentiments in many political circumstances.

Wanna know how I heard about this? It wasn’t from TV or radio or internet. It was from a big Clear Channel billboard in Times Square. Headline was just there for everyone to read (but no graphics and no image). Actually, maybe the news being in Times Square automatically makes this a big story.
