Camilo Jose Vergara has a very interesting article and photo essay on Slate about paired houses in Camden, New Jersey.

“Paired houses” is a term the author made up to describe the juxtaposition of abandoned houses directly next to occupied ones in Camden. Camilo writes about how the abandoned houses often create many problems for the people living in the house next door because squatters come in and start fires, do drugs, or trash the place (creating a lingering bad smell in the air).

Take a look at the photo slideshow here.

I did a project very similar to this in my sophomore year and it’s amazing to note the similarities in the community I chose (Jersey City) and this one depicted in the photos here.
