Sad news in the photo industry today as the death of Helen Levitt has been confirmed by her brother, Bill Levitt.

Helen Levitt was a pioneer of urban street photography and undoubtedly one of the photographers I fell in love with early on in my studies. Her knack for photographing people on the streets of New York made me want to imitate her style and viewpoint. Her books on New York City people and places have nurtured me in an understanding of photography as an expression as well as in my growing love for the city. For that, I am grateful to Helen and her photographs.
