Richard Smith of Think Create Believe has started a new project entitled Dollar ReDe$ign Project in which he asks the public to send in submissions on what they think a redesigned US currency note should look like. He argues that the American Dollar has not really changed since the 1930’s which is more than enough reason to see what people come up with if they had to imagine a new Dollar in circulation.
If you’d like to participate, there’s a small set of rules you must adhere by. Otherwise, the design is pretty much up to you. The deadline for submissions is July 4, 2009 and hopefully there will be a good amount of designs to look over once we get to that date.
The two images below are designs by Michelle Haft who wanted to redesign the Dollar as a way to remind people about what aspects of the economy are affected by it. The colors are lovely, I have to say.

Follow all of the updates to this project and see all new submissions over at the Dollar ReDe$ign Project’s website.

But then we can’t call them Benjamins and Hamiltons, etc…
We’ll just have to call them Billzzzzzzzz
I personally like our greenbacks. It’s different and unique. That’s really the only reason I like them though. I feel like if it changes to something more modern like other countries it just wouldn’t feel like real money anymore. When I use currency in other countries I feel like I’m using Monopoly money. Like bills are to gold, I feel like modern looking bills are to U.S. greenbacks. Shoot, we can’t even refer them to greenbacks anymore if we were to make them all colorful. In terms of design and art, they probably would look much better than our current notes, but yeah… it just wouldn’t feel as real and American.. if that makes sense.
Wow, I really dislike Haft’s designs. Sure, the colors are nice, but they look as if they belong to some minor country that’s recently been through a revolution. Smith’s are better, but look like they should be credit cards if anything. And it’s not that I dislike abstract art.
I like the idea behind this because I feel the “green bills” idea is kind of outdated. However, Americans are not ready for money that is not green. Plain and simple. People would claim it would somehow be “un-American” just like karena eluded to (I put that in quotes to signify me doing the in air jerk-off motion with my hand). There would be a group of people somewhere with some philosophical argument about how our green money somehow helps define us as a nation and if it was no longer green we would be losing part of our identity and what made us great…. or something stupid along those lines.
How about making US$ sky blue with David’s star on them and a motto:
“We are proud to be drinking jews”.
I think I misspelled the word juice and I apollogyz.
