First of all, I am very surprised that there aren’t already 3 billion tweets in the overall Twitter system. I would think that the number of tweets currently live would be so high that it’d be a number not even worth typing, but apparently, Twitter is just coming upon its 2,147,483,647 tweet later today.
With that said, there’s a so-called Twitpocalypse that’s about to ocurr according to some because the unique identifier associated with every single tweet on Twitter is about to hit 2,147,483, 647 which in computer terms is the limit of a signed integer. And until Twitter fixes this problem, it looks like many third-party Twitter apps will likely fail once that magical number has been hit.
This should be fun to witness. As of this post, Twitpocalypse is set to take place on 13 Jun 2009 at 11:18:51 AM. But of course, if you want to tweet about it, you can help Twitpocalypse happen sooner by submitting more tweets than usual. Lose-lose, I guess. Oh well.
i’m sure twitter has fixed it by now. i think it’s more about the 3rd party apps that refer to twitter posts by signed integer instead of by something that could handle larger numbers than 2^31-1.
We shall see!
woohoo
