I had a wonderful time tonight at Central Park’s Rumsey Field listening to Passion Pit and Phoenix. Both bands are incredibly solid live and very, very entertaining to watch. Phoenix was the highlight of course as they went through songs both new and old in their entire set. Their drummer is pretty insane as well and watching him go at it really made me want to bang my drums just as hard.
From here on in, if I ever get the chance to see Phoenix live in concert, I’m not even going to hesitate to purchase tickets. They are so awesome live and I’m going to go ahead and put them up there with Mute Math as the bands I would see hands-down no matter what the occasion.
In the gallery below, you’ll see a couple of photographs of Phoenix lead singer Thomas Mars up close because at the end of the set he jumped down and hung out with the crowd up front where I was. I sorta hugged him (but I don’t think he knows who it was). Anyway, I tried desperately to get a photo of me behind him by sticking the camera in front of him, but it didn’t quite work out. I just kept getting his swooshy hair — oh well, just as good I suppose.

Awesome. I thought Passion Pit sounded great live but could learn how to work a crowd better. As for Phoenix, I completely agree on their live performance being amazing – but I couldn’t see most of the show because we were far back. These photos show me what I could have seen if I was closer. I guess I will lower my shoulder and push my way forward next time.
Haha I’m listening to the Alphabetical album as I’m reading this.
I saw them on Thursday night, almost wet my pants.
I saw the Sat night show and thought both bands were solid. Do you know the name of Phoenix’s drummer?
He was bad ass and, in my view, the highlight of the show. So much enthusiasm with his entire body, not just his arms and feet. Incredible.
